One of the world's most popular file-sharing sites was shuttered Thursday, and its founder and several company officials were accused of facilitating millions of illegal downloads of films, music and other content.

An indictment accused Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders at least $500 million in lost revenue. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to make it easier for authorities to go after websites with pirated material, especially those with headquarters and servers overseas.

Megaupload is based in Hong Kong, but some of the alleged pirated content was hosted on leased servers in Ashburn, Virginia, which gave federal authorities jurisdiction, the indictment said.

The Justice Department said in a statement said that Kim Dotcom, 37, and three other employees were arrested Thursday in New Zealand at the request of U.S. officials. Three other defendants are at large.

Before the site was taken down, it posted a statement saying allegations that it facilitated massive breaches of copyright laws were "grotesquely overblown."

Apparently, it's not just megaupload, but it's sister sites (megavideo, and an adult website they own)

I believe the owners (7 people or so) got arrested and some other things that are bigger than just a website being shut down happened.

Can't believe this, MegaUpload is one of the most used file sharing websites in the world so this will have a massive effect on people on the internet for sure.

Indeed, MegaUpload is one of the largest and most used upload/download site I have ever seen. Though personally I don't like using it because strangely it loads slowly for me, it must be very unfortunate for other people who used it to keep their files. Same thing also happened to FileSonic and FileServe, if I remember correctly.

I truly hope other sites won't get closed, like MediaFire for example. Or else we'll be doomed. >__<

Hopefully MediaFire is looking to avoid this fate by cleaning up what it hosts.

I never used Megaupload much so I'm not really phased but it did have an impact I'm sure.
