For some reason I keep seeing forums with the owner having something... extra. Either Groups, Or Rank or just some silly little thing to make them seem better then normal users or even staff members. I think the rank of Administrator is fine and that the owners shouldn't have a special rank.

Do You Have A Special "Rank" For Owner? If so why?

Personally: I hate it and will stand by it.

Nope. All admins are called admins. But we can change our custom title to make our title more suiting if we wish.

Forgive me if it is a bit too harsh, but personally I think such distinction of owner and other administrators is a bit too much. At certain point it is even a bit childish, as if you're trying to show that you're the owner and the others are below you.

In my opinion, owner can be an owner but he/she must be good friends with the rest of the staff and the members, and somehow I feel that is hard to do if you make yourself different like that.

If I ever owned another forum, there's no way I would try to do this, all Administrators are administrators, regardless of the forum hierarchy.

No. The only time I believe that separating an administrator's roles PUBLICLY is on a very active forum - but only the name of the rank changes, not the colour of the rank or the person.
For example here - this is the only way I like to change things up - plus it makes us different from other forums ;D

Only my rank is different, and that's only because I can set a custom title in the UCP. Otherwise it would read "Administrator" because I have no problem being just that Wink

Being the founder, I like to have a different rank because I'm evil like that. :twist:

Of course, it's something sensible like 'Lead Administrator'

I just give mine a founder rank since I host with forumotion. IF i didn't host with forumotion I probably wouldn't have the rank.

But do you have other Administrators on your forum too? If so, wouldn't you prefer your users to see all Administrators equal... Like all Administrators could help them with their problems.

I have the same rank and title as my co-admin although I am the owner. There is no need to make myself look more important than she is just because I pay the bills. She is just as important as I am.

We don't, we are all in the same group, but we do change our user titles. For example, my 2nd hand man has his as NGG Webmaster and I have mine as NGG Founder.

Well, we have different types of administrators. I'm just the leading one, meaning I overrule the whole thing. It's not a control thing. Just to help organize the forum, even more.

I don't myself just keep myself as Administrator as that is what I feel I am. I can never understand why people give themselves anything different on a forum they run to be honest. I guess it just makes them see more important, don't see myself as being any more important than my members are on my forum.

It depends. It seems many people take that if you decide to say "founder" you are believing yourself above the rest. Not everyone who has the same tag did it for the same reason.

I can see it to be silly to call yourself "Founder" or call the other "Co-Admins" and I used to think they were being show off too. Then I saw some retired admins who were actually the founder and stayed as a normal member. I think it was fair they had the name and distinction if they started the community and helped it grow, even if they moved on the project. I stopped seeing it as something that separate people.

As other people have pointed out it also depends on the software you are running your forum into. I find it useful in places like Forumotion, where only the founder can do certain things, it helps to know which of them is the founder. Better than searching for /u1 (the first member to register), specially when they leave that first account as an impersonal account (news/emergency/etc).

At the moment in my boards I am not using ranks, as it is the groups what determines colour and 'permissions', so instead I am using manually the images in the mini profiles. This allow me multiple images at the same time. I am seeing it as a way to convey some information quicker.

In colour and rank, I always call us staff. I respect my team members and appreciate what they do for the community, and we are not to board about our position but to help around being friendly and polite. We're all still members. :]
