When advertising, what do you do? Do you use primarily forums, word of mouth, or advanced social media skills? I personally, use all three.

At the moment I'm currently focusing on Forumansion. But if I ever do get a forum, I would advertise it through Forumansion

Certainly that can't be the only forum you'd like to advertise on? Otherwise you're likely to see yourself with few to no active members

I personally take advantage of all three facts that you mentioned, cody, and I do tend to also buddy up with people and eventually earn their respect enough so they want to come on to my forum or forums simply because they know me...feels good to have followers

Forums seem to be the best target for us right now.

My current forum is not the type which works best through advertising forums like this, unfortunately, due to its unique niche. Therefore I could only hope from mouth to mouth, or through my and my members' social media to spread the words of what the site is about.

Though, for other kind of sites, you should try all those three ways to get your site known. Basically anything legal.

I have also paid for advertising. It wasn't wroth it in the end.

Well, on a particular forum, I paid $20 for my ad to be at the header of the site for a month. It really, didn't bring me any members. Yeah, it brought a lot of traffic. But a lot of the traffic was search engines. Not worth it.

When I was running Fuji Planet, I came here first. I advertised some, but made friends in the process. I think that's what really works for me. With the GD genre of that forum, people I actually knew seemed to stick around longer. Members earned from advertisements didn't stay for long and eventually forgot about the forum.
We had a twitter page for Fuji. That didn't work out.
We had some videos on YouTube but that didn't prove very useful either even though we won the contest at the Forumotion ESF.

With the whole Spotfeed experiment I advertised here and on some other forums. I actually got a small of a member base from just that. It might have gotten bigger if I stuck with it.

So really just forums and having friends on them seem to work for me.
