I don't much anymore, but when I do I do it because I like talking to people I don't know and are far away from me, yet I have a connection with. It's interesting.

Generally their content. If it looks like they have taken time to set up their forum I will join. Occasionally this changes if I know the owner or have had good standing with him/her.
